If you’re a local or a savvy traveler adept at navigating Japan’s culinary world, you might have heard whispers about Nan no an. This unassuming restaurant, tucked away near Tennoji Station and close to Tennoji Park, is a true hidden gem that offers a dining experience you won’t soon forget. Allow me to introduce you to Nan no an, where every dish is a delightful surprise.

At first glance, Nan no an's menu may seem modest, especially if you're accustomed to meat-centric meals. I, too, am a devoted carnivore, indulging in meat daily. So, you can imagine my initial disappointment when I realized meat wasn't the star of this culinary show. My companion made the reservation, and I went along, albeit with low expectations. However, what followed was a revelation.

The menu is a parade of meticulously prepared, delicate morsels that showcase the artistry of the chefs. Despite the minimal use of meat, each dish is presented with such care and precision that it transforms into a work of art. You might think that a predominantly vegetarian menu would leave you hungry, but Nan no an proves otherwise. By the end of the meal, I was not only satisfied but also eager to embrace a broader culinary horizon.

Every dish at Nan no an tells a story, each bite a new chapter. The meal began with a rice dish, a blend of various grains paired perfectly with pickled vegetables and a stunning stewed onion. Now, I never imagined I’d wax poetic about an onion, but this one was extraordinary. Sweet and tender, it shone so brightly that the sprinkling of meat seemed almost redundant.

The culinary journey continued with hot, crispy tempura and sashimi that challenged my belief that the best sashimi hails from Toyama and Kanazawa. This sashimi was a close contender, bursting with fresh, delicate flavors.

Our meal was complemented by two types of Nihonshu (sake), and the standout was undoubtedly the Tama Asahi Echoes. This sake was a revelation: sweet and subtle, reminiscent of a Riesling Kabinett but with its own unique character. Bright floral notes mingled with hints of Asian pear and a dark chocolaty aftertaste. As a nihonshu enthusiast, I can attest that this one will transport you and challenge any preconceived notions you might have. It was so good that I ordered a bottle as soon as I got home.

Nan no an offers more than just a meal; it provides a unique and extremely local dining experience. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, this restaurant is worth the journey. The care and thoughtfulness in each dish reflect the essence of Japanese cuisine: simplicity, elegance, and a profound respect for ingredients.
