The Streets & Spaces in Between.
Society is like a river. It is always moving, always carrying something with it and always changing the landscape around it. Most of the time, we fail to notice the erosion or the changing sediment because we are standing too close to see it happen.
My street photography is an attempt to slow that process down long enough to examine it.
I am drawn to the small contradictions that exist in public spaces: celebration seen through a wall of cell phones, poverty beneath luxury branding, people physically close but mentally somewhere else, tradition existing beside technology and individuals moving through systems much larger than themselves. These moments are often ordinary enough to go unnoticed, but together they reveal something about the values, habits and conditions of the society that produced them.
I approach the street as an observer. I am not interested in forcing meaning into a scene or telling the viewer exactly what to think. I look for relationships that already exist and use composition, timing, light and shadow to make them more visible. Black and white allows me to reduce distraction and concentrate on form, contrast and the tension between what is illuminated and what is left unseen.
My goal is to fill the frame without overwhelming it. I use fundamental compositional principles to organize the complexity of the street while preserving the ambiguity of the moment. The photographs are not intended to provide answers. They are records of things that were happening beside one another and questions about what those relationships might mean.
These images are evidence of a society in motion and an effort to notice the changes we often recognize only after they have already passed.
